Montgomery Distillery 5 Year Old American Single Malt Whiskey

Tonight’s dram takes me to the Montgomery Distillery in Missoula, Montana for “farm-to-glass” spirits. The Montgomery American Single Malt opens with honey, spices, and a truffle-like earthiness, turning malty vanilla, raisins, and lemon zest with a dusting of cocoa in the background, then more honey, dates, and herbal tea with some eucalyptus menthol that opens the sinuses. The oily full mouthfeel and thick clingy legs provide for a long spicy cinnamon toasted-oak vanilla finish with the cocoa becoming more prevalent late in the finish. Subsequent sips bring the cocoa more and more to the forefront. The flavors take a few minutes to develop, ultimately delivering a robust, complex dram that is very enjoyable. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
