Monkey 47 Gin began back in 1950 when founder Alexander Stein heard of the story of Montgomery Collins; a Wing Commander in the British Air Force who took over the ‘Wild Monkey’ guest house in the Black Forest of Germany, otherwise known as Schwarzwald. Here, Collins learned the traditions of distilling fruit and eventually developed his specialty gin. Stein rejuvenated Collin’s Black Forest Dry Gin and founded Monkey 47 in 2010 using a mastery of 47 botanicals and herbs along with 100% fresh ingredients - all married with the purest Black Forest spring water. The brand was sold to renowned beverage manufacturer Pernod Ricard in 2020. That same year their Distiller’s Cut edition was released; aged Monkey 47 gin matured for an undisclosed amount of time in hand-selected Mizunara barrels made from 150 year old Japanese Mizunara. This limited edition iteration was offered in a mere 2000 bottles exclusively for the US market.
