Originally produced by Carthusian monks as far back as 1737, this "elixir of long life" is still manufactured at the Grande Chartreuse monastery located in the Chartreuse Mountains in the French Alps by two monks - the only ones who know the secrets of Chartreuse Green. Derived from a carefully guarded alchemical recipe provided to the monks by French King Henry IV in 1605, Chartreuse Green contains over 130 distinct herbs, plants, and flowers, and is aged in large barrels of undisclosed origin for several years before bottling. This delicious herbal liqueur has continued to maintain its historical flavor and fame all over the world and is now produced in several prized iterations including Yellow Chartreuse, Chartreuse VEP, Liqueur du 9° Centenaire, and Chartreuse 1605 - Liqueur d'Elixir.
