Lismore Single Malt 15 Year Scotch Whiskey is a classic take on the Speyside tradition. “Mystery malts” like the ones bottled by Lismore often get a bad rap from aficionados because the origin of the hops cannot be confirmed. That said, if you avoid this selection from Lismore because you aren’t sure what distillery the hops originated from, you are going to miss out on a rich scotch with a complexity that is deceiving. Anything considered “ordinary” about this malt from the outside looking in is quickly disputed by scents and flavors you’ll enjoy from the first sip. Its light-caramel color is deceiving, because the flavor is surprisingly full of body, and the finish lasts much longer than other bottlings from the brand. When it hits your nose, butterscotch, fruits, honey, spices and vanilla create a sweet flavor that perfectly leads into the malt. When it hits your palate, the rich flavor really starts to surface as the fruits become riper, the honey sweetens and an earthy quality balances them out. While rich in flavor, the 15-year from Lismore has a soft texture that surprisingly brings some heat — comparable to a 100-proof malt.…

About the brand

Lismore is a brand of Speyside single malt and blended Scotch whisky that was created in 1974 by William Lundie & Co. - aka John and Willie Lundie. Named after the island Lismore found in the Inner Hebridean region between Mull and the mainland, this prestigious brand guard the provenance of its whisky closely, replicating the original recipe to ensure the same profound quality and masterful blending is imparted with every release. Lismore itself isn't an actual distillery, but rather independently bottled Speyside whiskies sourced from an undisclosed distillery. The Lismore brand is now owned and bottled by J & G Grant, of the world-renowned Glenfarclas distillery - and currently offers various iterations including; blended Scotch ranging in age from 5, 8, 12, 15, 18, and 21 years, and Lismore The Legend - a limited edition 21 year old single malt finished in select ex-sherry hogsheads. Nose is nut weak with gentle peat and smoke. Taste has some nectar notes and comparable peat/smoke from the nose. Nearly appears to be somewhat watered down despite the fact that I included no water.

Smell sweet peanuts and toffee. Taste like I included water despite the fact that I haven't. Rich like an irish yet with next to no smoke on the end.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Rasberries, peaches, maybe some pears also, a good bit of rotted wood, and something like stewed apples; rich and buttery on the nose, too.

Taste

A touch of honey up front with sutble, muddled fruit, and oakiness throughout; couldn’t get much more flavor movement; some sugary sweetness developes with time (marshmellows).

Finish

Pretty short; the mouthfeel just sort of drops off, leaving a touch of oak behind for a second or three.
