About the brand

Old Grand-Dad is a brand of bourbon whiskey distilled at the Jim Beam Plant in Clermont, Kentucky. The
brand was created by Raymond B. Hayden and named after his grandfather Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., who
was a well known distiller during his lifetime. The Hayden family's first commercial distillery was created in
1840, and the whiskey has been in production since that time despite several changes of ownership. In 1899,
Old Grand-Dad was sold to the Wathen family, whose broad interests in the whiskey business later formed
the American Medicinal Spirits Company and the foundations of National Distillers Group. During prohibition,
the company produced "medicinal whiskey" for sick, blind, and lame patients. National Distillers had
facilities in Cincinnati, Ohio and Frankfort, Kentucky, and also produced Old Crow, Old Overholt and Old
Taylor. In 1987, National Distillers Group sold the spirits business to the Fortune Brands holding company,

Great modest choice for high rye sweethearts. The vanilla notes are extraordinary in a good old. Not all that much. Just grandpa hack medication.

Tasting Notes

Nose

A wave of cinnamon leads the charge, followed by sweet caramel, vanilla, and a hint of burnt oak. Cinnamon dominates overall, but the balance of sweeter scents along with the oak keeps it manageable. While it comes across as somewhat one-dimensional, it's still inviting.

Taste

Big cinnamon spice pops upfront with a flash of Fireball candy potency. Dark fruit and baking spices follow, along with a touch of rye spice. It has a nice intensity, and like the nose, the cinnamon dominates and is also quite pleasant. It's medium-bodied with a nice mouthfeel.

Finish

Sweet flavors of caramel candy and raw sugar develop first, followed by baking spices and a very light display of seasoned oak. The finish is medium-length and has just the right amount of intensity. Enjoyable overall and leaves a good impression.
