Selection Batch Two 21 Year Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 750ml
The Speyside region of Scotland is known for its rich, alluvial soils and golden barley fields, which result in elegant and incredibly complex whiskies. In addition, the region’s unique microclimate and location along the North Sea shelter it from the Gulf Stream, providing an ideal environment for maturing an opulent and lush whisky. As a result, over 50 working distilleries call the Speyside region of Scotland home. Rattray’s Selection Batch #2 Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is crafted from a unique blend of four different Speyside single malt whiskies produced by four distilleries: Tamdhu, Strathmill, Cragganmore and Mortlach. Each whisky was hand-selected based on its quality and depth of flavor. The backbone of the blend is composed of single malt whisky sourced from the Tamdhu Distillery. The whisky was distilled on September 29, 1989, and matured in a cask that was previously used to mature bourbon (Cask #8150) for 23 years. The Tamdhu whisky contributes bold notes of sharp fruit, barley and spices to the flavor profile of blend. The Strathmill Single Malt Whisky used in the blend was distilled on May 25, 1991, and also matured in an ex-bourbon barrel (Cask #1289) for 21 years. The Strathmill whisky contributes lighter notes of salt, black pepper and chilies to the blend. The Cragganmore Single Malt Whisky used in the blend was distilled on March 8, 1991, and matured in Cask #1155 for 22 years. It provides rich, heavy notes of vanilla, caramel and toffee to the blend. The fourth single malt used in the blend was distilled by the Mortlach Distillery on June 3, 1992. The whisky was matured for 21 years and contributes notes of brown sugar and intense fruit to the blend. Once the four whiskies were identified, they were married together and then matured for an additional six months in casks that were previously used to mature Oloroso Sherry. This secondary beautyrest in the Oloroso Sherry casks created a whisky that is engagingly deep and complex, with a lush, dark and heavy flavor profile.

About the brand
Founded by Andrew Dewar Rattray in 1868, A. D. Rattray began trading as an importer of French wines, Italian spirits and olive oil. More importantly, however, the company also established itself as a specialist in the field of blending and storage of malt and grain whiskies. The company’s horse-drawn carts, carrying cases of fine wine and spirits, were a familiar sight on Clydeside and in Central Glasgow during the late 1800s. As such, A. D. Rattray came to represent a number of well-known Highland Malt distilleries – most notably Stronachie – selling bulk whisky to wine and spirit merchants, publicans and the main Scotch whisky blending houses all across the West of Scotland. Following the death of Andrew Dewar Rattray and a crisis in the industry, the company passed into the hands of the enterprising whisky broker William Walker, whose daughter later married Stanley P. Morrison. This union of these two whisky-loving families, the Walkers and the Morrison, secured the future of A. D. Rattray and allowed it to pass into the hand of their descendant and our current Chairman, Stanley Walker Morrison. The skills and knowledge that have passed down through the generations and the continued guidance of the Morrison family have formed the company as we know it today. 1868 Andrew Dewar Rattray sets up shop as a grocer in Glasgow, selling wine and olive oils from Europe, dark rums from Jamaica… and Scottish whisky. Dumbarton Road Glasgow 1890 Stronachie distillery was built in the remote Ochil Mountains in Perthshire by Alexander & MacDonald. The beginning of our connection to the story... Stronachie Established Andrew Dewar Rattray develops a very successful distribution network. For many years he sells whisky from famous Highland Malt Distilleries including Stronachie to merchants, publicans and Glasgow’s blending houses. 1926 Stanley P. Morrison, the father of our Chairman, goes to work for William Walker - an enterprising whisky broker active in the blending, bottling and distribution of whisky since the mid 1800s. Stanley P Morrison 1928 Stronachie Distillery, having succeeded in producing a fine spirit for around 30 years, is forced to close. Like many other distilleries at that time, soaring coal and grain prices forced it to cease production. Stronachie Distillery 1904 1938 Following the death of Andrew Dewar Rattray in 1910 and economic disasters of the 1920s, the company A. Dewar Rattray is sold to William Walker & Co. William Walker 1939 Stanley P. Morrison marries Elizabeth Walker, the daughter of William Walker. Two whisky-loving families, the Walkers and the Morrison are united. Despite rationing during World War II, William Walker & Co. continues to keep bars flowing with whisky, supplying the West of Scotland licensed trade. This continued until 1949, when Walker passed away. 1949 A. D. Rattray is inherited by Mrs W. E. Bruce, nee Walker… the sister of Elizabeth Walker Morrison and daughter of William Walker.
