Magnus Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750ml
MAGNUS celebrates Highland Park’s founder, Magnus Eunson, a butcher and church officer by day, and bootlegger by night who set the distillery on its path to becoming ‘The Best Spirit in the World.' Crafted using primarily first-fill American oak sherry casks, MAGNUS is smooth and flavorful with notes of vanilla and caramelized pineapple, overlaid with Highland Park’s signature aromatic smoke. The newest addition to the range, MAGNUS is the perfect tribute to the distilery's founder, Magnus Eunson, a butcher and church officer by day, and a bootlegger by night who set Highland Park on its path to becoming ‘The Best Spirit in the World’. Available exclusively in North America, MAGNUS is crafted using a high proportion of first-fill Sherry seasoned American oak casks to deliver the lightly peated characteristics of Highland Park but with a more profound vanilla flavor profile.

About the brand
With a history dating back over 200 years, Orkney-based Highland Park is one of the most respected single malts in the world. The distillery works to the same exacting and with the same methods as it has had since its birth in 1798. The distillery found its feet fully in the 1870s, when it fell under the ownership of first William Stuart [who owned Miltonduff] and then from 1885 with his business partner James Grant (previously the manager of The Glenlivet) who took full control in 1895. Highland Distillers (who had shares in R&B) took full control in 1937 and Highland Park is now part of the Edrington Group. Highland Park is one of only a handful of distilleries that still retains a traditional malting floor, working each batch of malt by hand, in what is an extremely labor intensive process. To malt their barley, it is steeped it in the mineral rich water from the Crantit spring, before transferred to the malting floor to slowly germinate. When it is ready, the barley is then placed in kilns where the aromatic peating process begins. Highland Park’s bourbon barrels are not routinely filled. Traditional oak casks seasoned with dry Oloroso sherry are used; which the distillery claims help contribute to the “distinctive richness” in the resulting spirit. The whisky then goes through a process called Harmonisation. Distillers often see this practice as an unnecessary expense, yet Highland Park consider it an essential part of their traditional process. Each individual batch of whisky is drawn together from a variety of cask types, contributing an array of flavours. This harmonisation takes up to six months and gives the whisky improved consistency, complexity and balance. However, ‘unnecessary’ the traditional processes and additional harmonisation may seem, the resulting whisky appears to gain great benefit. Highland Park has been named ‘The Best Spirit in the World’ no less than three times, and has also gained the accolades of: World’s Best Single Malt for its 21 years old and the Ultimate Spirit in 2013 for the 25 year old.

$36 US on special at Virginia ABC. I truly wish we had a possibility for half stars as this one I would rate at strong 3.5. Smokey sweet and goes down excessively simple. The nose is brilliant however the sense of taste misses the mark. At 40% ABV it is likewise simple to suffocate. Just added a drop to discharge the pressure. If I somehow managed to figure I would state this malt is around 5-6 years of age. With everything taken into account $36 for a jug of Good country Park DNA not awful but rather for very little more you can get the 12.

Nose: exceptionally sweet light peat nectar somewhat astringent Sense of taste: smooth mouthfeel light peat sweet marginally astringent Completion: medium short length mellow zest a smidgen of pleasantness A decent scotch. Not as extreme or intricate as its more established kin yet at the same time entirely charming. Not as much sherry or oak impact as the more seasoned good country park contributions. A few likenesses to a mixed scotch which is bizarre for a solitary malt. I speculate this is on the grounds that it is youthful.

Tasting Notes
Nose
Orcadian peat and rancio rise up to greet the nose, followed by florals and tannins.
Taste
More peat and florals appear on the palate with dried pineapple and apricot and a dash of dates, herbs, and pepper on the back palate.
Finish
The medium finish is clean and drying, giving way to lemon zest, light smoke, and a whiff of menthol.
