Final Reserve 42 Year Old Double Oaked Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 750ml
A fantastically well aged bourbon, distilled in 1973 at Yellowstone distillery in Louisville, KY, 12 years before it shut down. Bottled by James Thompson & Brother in May 2018, and titled The Final Reserve. This is batch #3 and is one of 150 bottled at 115 proof. This is bottle number 32. The Thompson family have a rich distilling history, former proprietors of Glenmore distillery as well. This bourbon continues this history, as one of the oldest bourbons ever bottled at an incredible 45 years old. James "Buddy" Thompson recommends drinking this as bottled, but also suggests adding a drop or two of sherry to soften the tannins and smooth out any harshness should you prefer it that way. This bottle was launched at the Frazier Museum in Louisville, and the presentation includes a 10cl sample bottle of the same liquid, a drinking glass, and a section of the barrel stave. A 43 and 41 year old release are set to follow later in 2018.

About the brand
Glenmore Distillery was originally the R. Monarch Distillery founded in 1849. The company entered bankruptcy proceedings in 1898. Monarch had long been producing brands that included Kentucky Tavern and Glenmore at their plant in Owensboro. In 1901 the company was acquired by James Thompson and his brother Francis P. Thompson for $30,000 and renamed the Glenmore Distillery Company. In 1903, the Kentucky Tavern trademark was first registered. In 1904, the Old Thompson brand was introduced under the guidance of the Thompson brothers. When James Thompson died in 1924, his sons, Col. Frank B. and James P. Thompson, assumed leadership, with Frank becoming chairman and president. The Thompsons maintained the Glenmore as a concentration warehouse, bottling and distributing medicinal whiskey during Prohibition. Glenmore proved a successful and durable company, its main brand being Kentucky Tavern. In 1944 the firm purchased the Yellowstone Bourbon brand from the Taylor & Williams Distillery of Louisville. Glenmore followed the lead of other large firms and marketed imported whiskies and cordials through its subsidiaries, Mr. Boston, Foreign Vintages and Viking Distillery. In 1955 Glenmore barreled its 2 millionth barrel of bourbon and Glenmore vodka was introduced. Glenmore introduced Glenmore Gin in 1959 and also became the first distillery to break the self-imposed ban on using women to sell distilled spirits. The Thompson family maintained control of the company until 1991, at which time it was acquired by Guinness, which merged it with Schenley Industries and named the new entity United Distillers, which sold it in 1995 to Barton Brands. In March 2009, the Sazerac Company of New Orleans purchased the Barton distillery and many other brands owned by Constellation Brands as part of a $334 million transaction. Sazerac maintains the Glenmore distillery as a bottling plant, In 2016 Glenmore started distillation again of Rum. Production was temporarily suspended in January 2019 after a fatal work accident.

Tasting Notes
Nose
The nose is certainly not overpowering and there is heaps of aroma jumping out of the glass. Lemongrass, mint and eucalyptus alongside pink grapefruit and lots of freshly cut grass.
Taste
Nose and palate very similar. Big and full flavor. For a new bourbon drinker the purely neat version is possibly overpowering on the spice/pepper, but not on the alcohol. The Gents went rouge after the scoring and added a drop or two of water and as expected it softened the experience making it more creamy.
Finish
This is a damn good finish with those spicy notes lasting long into the night.
