Founded in 2010, Kings County Distillery is the first legal New York state distillery since Prohibition, and a bastion of creativity within the whiskey community. Working with primarily New York state grain and traditional Scottish copper stills, Kings County continues to push the limits for high quality craft spirits. Currently producing a “moonshine” style unaged whiskey, bourbon, chocolate whiskey, and barrel strength bourbon, Kings County has recently released a peated bourbon, which is he subject of this review. Also on the way for Kings County in the near future is a single malt. Apparently the result of a distillery malt shortage, the Peated Bourbon was a happy accident. Faced with a waning supply of regular bourbon malt, a Kings County distiller grabbed some peated malt to finish the batch. A year later, the spirit was sampled and the results were so delicious they decided to start making that same Peated Bourbon again. Whatever the story behind this release might be, it seems to be gaining some notoriety, even winning double gold at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.…

About the brand

Established in 2010 by partners David Haskill, a magazine editor, and co-founder/Master Distiller Colin Spoelman, a Yale-educated ex-architect with roots in Kentucky - Kings County Distillery is cited as the first distillery opened in New York City since Prohibition. Recently awarded the title of the #2 Craft Bourbon by American wine critic and New York Times writer Eric Asimov, this relatively unknown yet not to be underestimated craft whiskey brand distills its own spirits exclusively and offers several products including; Peated Bourbon, Empire Bourbon, Bib Bourbon, and King's County Chocolate Whiskey. Kings County has gone on to win multiple awards and was named the Distillery of the Year by the American Distilling Institute in 2016, and continues to offer innovatively crafted whiskey using various tried and true distilling practices from various cultures - from Scottish to American. The result is a product that exhibits true, undeniable quality in every drop.

Tasting Notes

Nose

A pinch of tobacco, with smoky burnt sugar, a touch of vanilla and charred pineapple.

Taste

Candied citrus, floral honey and flamed orange peel, with gentle bonfire smoke in the background.

Finish

Dried hay, a hint of apricot and a subtly sweet smoky note linger.
