Deerhammer Distilling Company Port Cask Finish American Single Malt Whiskey 750ml Bottle

Tonight’s dram takes me (virtually) back to Buena Visa, Colorado, to the Deerhammer distillery. Their signature single malt blew me away – one of USA’s best single malts, and better than many of the Scottish malts. Their port cask is based on this same aged single malt, but finished in port casks for an additional year or two. While their signature dram fills the air with cherry blossoms, this dram fills the air with black cherries – like a cherry pie bakery, and opens on the palate with the same – bold, dark, black cherries with a compliment of blackberries and raspberries, deepening the darkness, followed by tart apricots, orange peel, and dark chocolate, then cinnamon, black pepper, and toasted oak round-out the palette. The mouthfeel is buttery (not quite as buttery as the signature single malt) and the legs are thick-and-clingy, delivering a long, satisfying, berry-forward, spicy dram that demands another sip, or two, or… Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
