About the brand
Established during the American Revolution in 1780 by James E. Pepper, a Kentucky Colonel and the master distiller who introduced the world to the "Old Fashioned" cocktail - Old Pepper Distillery, aka James E. Pepper Distillery, is located in Lexington, KY. Celebrated as one of the state's most historically relevant distilleries of its time - the facility was abandoned in 1958 and later resurrected by Amir Peay, an entrepreneur who relaunched the brand in 2008. Distilling resumed on-site in 2017, with Peay spending over a decade of research before restoring the old buildings and mechanical systems to how they operated back in 1934. Keeping to the traditional recipe and quality ingredients, Peay has rebuilt the James E. Pepper into the distinguished American whiskey brand it once was, providing premium selections including Single Barrel Rye, Old Pepper Finest Kentucky Oak Bourbon, and James E. Pepper 1776 Barrel Proof and 100-Proof Rye Whiskey.

A barrel pick by my preferred nearby store Container Animal dwellingplace. multi Year container quality (107 proof) MGP. Can't turn out badly with anything Jason from Jug Outbuilding chooses. In case you're sufficiently fortunate to get one of his Four Roses selects look! I'd never known about Old Pepper Rye. Nothing unexpected seeing as I needed to submit for it to be added to Distiller. I've seen the multi year whiskey going for An abundant excess at my nearby spot yet for $40 for a barrel pick rye why not? Nose: Extremely lush fiery notes with vanilla lemon strip solid ethanol and a portion of that excessively youthful" piney bourbon nose. Flavor: Still a tad of youthful pine yet sweet and fiery with progressively natural green notes. A smidgen liquor forward yet enormous on the sweet warmth. Finish: Barrel roast dark pepper and afterward increasingly sweet natural notes. Not excessively hot. It's somewhat youthful with a portion of those pine takes note of that show it required additional time in barrel yet by and large it's strong at the cost. A decent sweet and hot rye with some natural notes that make it intricate and intriguing. I think in a year or two more in barrel this would be explosive rather than just alright."

Tasting Notes
Nose
Orange peel, black pepper, and black licorice give way to a potent rye spice. Balanced in its delivery and quintessentially rye.
Taste
Ginger root and orange peel combined with young oak. Full bodied and nicely developed.
Finish
Black peppercorns, rye spice, and a rush of cinnamon. Sweeter notes of cotton candy and caramel develop on the backend. Long.
