About the brand

Glenkinchie lies, as the name might suggest, in a glen of the Kinchie Burn near the village of Pencaitland, East Lothian. It is situated about 15 miles from Edinburgh. The distillery is set in farmland. The name 'Kinchie' is a corruption of 'De Quincy', the original owners of the land. Its origins date back to around 1825 when it was founded by brothers John and George Rate, While there are no direct records it seems likely that Glenkinchie is the Milton Distillery previous recorded in the area. The brothers probably renamed it in about 1837. In 1853, the Rate Brothers were bankrupted and the site converted to a sawmill. In 1881, the plant was rebuilt and whisky-making restarted under Maj. James Grey. In 1969 the distillery stopped malting its own grain and the malting floors were turned into a museum of malt whisky. The Glenkinchie label was relatively little known until 1989, when United Distillers started marketing it under their Classic Malts brand.

The multi year old unique discharge at $400-500 a jug Im not certain is justified despite all the trouble. The completion is oaky dry and somewhat smoky. This is mind-blowingly acceptable and makes me miserable about the Glenkinchie center range which is quite unsuitable. Paid $190 for this jug. This is a container slaughter audit. I will attempt to sum up what this container advertised. Nose: So green! Green custard underripe organic products Granny Smith apple grass. Best use of grass notes of any whisky I can recollect. Sense of taste: Sweet true to form appearance however then theres a relentless change to smoky fiery dryness. Consuming grass. Menthol. Green tea. Finish: Woody herbaceous. A little mezcal smokiness. Minty as well. Respectable wait. This can deal with some water. Water will streamline the edges and changes. Make things taste somewhat more cooked. Sad to see this jug unfilled. I couldn't imagine anything better than to have another at a similar cost. Stars: So surprisingly alluring for Glenkinchie. An energetic measure for its age with a unique story to tell. Cons: Packaged in 2010 and constrained to 4854 jugs. Presumably wont have the option to discover these any longer. They arent actually a collectible so its difficult to settle the score on the auxiliary market. Imprint: 93/100 (territory 92-95. N = 7)
