2024 has been another great year for fans of Rye Whiskey. Whether you're new to rye or a seasoned connoisseur, there are a few standout bottles hitting the market that you won't want to miss. We've carefully curated our picks for the most exciting rye whiskeys of 2024. From bold barrel-proof expressions to elegantly aged offerings, here's what we think should be on your radar this year.
We think this might be the crown jewel of rye releases this year. The first addition to the Col. E.H. Taylor line in two years takes us back to rye territory, and we couldn't be more excited. This release marks a significant moment for Buffalo Trace, as we haven't seen a rye expression from Taylor since their inaugural rye release in 2012. What makes this version special is its impressive 126-proof (63% ABV) presentation, which we think perfectly showcases the intensity and complexity that rye whiskey can achieve. The mash bill, while not officially disclosed, is believed to be approximately 65% rye and 35% malted barley, setting it apart from many other ryes on the market that tend to use higher rye content. This unique grain combination creates a delicate balance between rye's signature spice and the subtle sweetness that malted barley brings to the table.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Sharp and boozy with classic rye aromatics - caraway seed, toasted rye bread, and pipe tobacco provide a racy, spicy base. We're particularly impressed by the strong orange peel notes that emerge.
Palate: The fruit and herbal elements create a delightful harmony, enveloped by toasty char. Despite its high proof, we find it surprisingly approachable.
Finish: A long, peppery conclusion with herbal notes and a hint of menthol.
Pro tip: We love how a few drops of water transform this whiskey, bringing out a soothing brown butter quality that perfectly tempers the pepper and spice. Don't be afraid to experiment with proof strength - this rye maintains its character beautifully even with dilution.

At 10 years old, this latest addition to Wild Turkey's prestigious Master's Keep lineup represents their oldest age-stated rye whiskey ever released. Drawing from barrels aged 10 to 12 years, Eddie Russell specifically chose casks that showcase what he considers the "sweet spot" for rye maturation - before the 14-year mark where barrel influence can overwhelm the spirit's natural character. The whiskey maintains Wild Turkey's traditional rye mashbill, but the extended aging in their #4 alligator char barrels creates a remarkably different profile from their standard offerings. While many distilleries are rushing to release older ryes to meet market demand, Triumph demonstrates the patience and precision that has become synonymous with the Master's Keep series.
Tasting Notes
Nose: A layer of char tempers the grassy greenery, with a slight barnyard note of hay bales and saddle leather creating an austere profile rarely seen in rye.
Palate: Impressive balance between spicy and peppery up top, then silky with notes of caramel and vanilla. The experience shifts into notes of baked apples, butterscotch, and sweetened breakfast cereal.
Finish: Fruity on the back end, reminiscent of older Canadian ryes, with a holiday charm perfect for spice-laden cocktails.

Michter's 10-Year Rye was one of the most anticipated annual releases, and the 2024 batch didn’t disappoint. Known for its smooth, refined character, this rye is all about balance — it showcases just enough spice without overwhelming the palate, making it a standout for those who appreciate a well-rounded, age-worthy rye. This edition stays true to the signature elegance that has made the 10-Year Rye such a fan favorite, with the distillery focusing on coaxing out the best of the spirit without over-oaking.
Tasting Notes
Nose: The nose is fresh and minty with a clean, herbal quality, as hints of wintergreen and mint chocolate emerge first, followed by a rich array of oak-driven sweetness—vanilla, toffee, and a touch of dried fruit. There's also a faint, floral note of lavender and chamomile.
Palate: The entry is smooth with bright, zesty peppermint that quickly transitions into a deeper, darker profile of baked goods — think cinnamon rolls and clove-spiced gingerbread. There’s a touch of cocoa and brown sugar, along with roasted nuts.
Finish: The finish lingers with herbal notes of eucalyptus, a light dusting of cinnamon, and a gentle oak char that fades into a creamy, menthol finish.

Elijah Craig’s latest innovation brings their acclaimed toasted barrel finishing technique to their rye whiskey portfolio. Released in July 2024 as a traditional American Straight Rye Whiskey with 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley, this release exemplifies the distinctive Kentucky-style rye profile that emerged post-Prohibition. What sets this apart is Elijah Craig’s commitment to pushing boundaries while respecting traditional methods. The whiskey undergoes a unique finishing process in custom toasted new oak barrels, designed in partnership with Independent Stave Company. The custom toasting protocol involves nearly an hour-long process followed by a precise flash of heat, creating what Heaven Hill's Master Distiller Conor O'Driscoll describes as the perfect marriage of toast and char. This method preserves delicate flavor compounds that would otherwise be destroyed in traditional charring while still maintaining compliance with federal aging requirements.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Opens with classic rye spice notes quickly followed by toasted marshmallow and vanilla bean. The custom toast brings forward subtle notes of cocoa and roasted nuts that aren't typically found in traditional rye expressions.
Palate: Rich waves of caramelized brown sugar and baking spices lead the way. The medium rye mashbill shows its influence through a pleasant pepperiness that's beautifully tempered by the toasted barrel's contribution of maple syrup and dark chocolate notes.
Finish: Remarkably long with a perfect balance of sweet and spice. Toasted pecan and cinnamon persist while subtle hints of rye bread and clove add complexity through the fade.

Kentucky's craft darling New Riff has been rolling hard eights lately. Their limited-edition High Note Collection featured a pair of 8-year-old offerings last fall, followed by a more widely available 8-year-old bourbon in the spring and now this, an 8-year-old expression of their Kentucky straight rye. This is the same 95/5 recipe rye that New Riff unveiled way back in 2019, and while it has still been distilled and aged by the Covington-based distillery, it doesn't carry the bottled in bond designation like those earliest offerings owing to the need to blend two distilling seasons to allow for a wider release. Known for its focus on producing high-quality, non-chill-filtered whiskies, New Riff allows for a fuller flavor and mouthfeel. With its robust rye characteristics and smooth mouthfeel, it's a must-try for fans of the spirit who appreciate a bold, spice-forward profile.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Warm baking spice, toffee, and seasoned oak, with notes of minted syrup and black tea.
Palate: Pepper and baking spice up front, followed by wintergreen and oak. Fresh lemon balm and green tea emerge on the midpalate.
Finish: Pine resin, cloves, and pink peppercorn.

WhistlePig continues to push boundaries with their eleventh Boss Hog release, drawing inspiration from India's rich culinary traditions. What makes this release truly unique is its finishing process in barrels seasoned with Thandai, a traditional Indian drink featuring an aromatic blend of spices. After aging in new American Oak, the whiskey undergoes a final maturation in these experimental Thandai-seasoned barrels, creating a one-of-a-kind expression that bridges Eastern and Western flavor traditions. This may be one of the best releases in their Boss Hog series to date.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Complex and exotic, leading with pungent incense and warming baking spices. Notes of clove, nutmeg, and spicy chai tea emerge, complemented by citrus peel and distinctive saffron aromatics.
Palate: Sweet entry that quickly gives way to an explosion of spices. The traditional rye character is transformed by layers of cardamom, saffron, and fennel, creating a bazaar-like explosion of flavors. Floral notes of rose and jasmine weave throughout, while baking spices provide a familiar backbone.
Finish: Extraordinarily long and complex, featuring waves of baking spices that transition into sweet tropical fruits and lingering floral notes.
Proof: Varies by barrel (103.8-105.2)
Missing from the 2023 release calendar was a Barrel Strength Straight Rye, but Michter's is coming out swinging for 2024 with what might be their best barrel strength rye to date. As always, this is a single barrel product, so some variation is to be expected across barrels. The average proof for the March 2024 releases clocked in at 110.2.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Hallmark, high-proof Kentucky-style rye with plenty of fresh pepper and baking spice to complement Michter's time-tested oak profile with its soft smoke, chocolate, and old furniture notes.
Palate: Chewy and rich with an even, simmering spice that feels almost as mature and approachable as the lower proof, 10-year-old expressions. Familiar notes of dark brown sugar, dried herbs, and plump, dark cherry give way to a decadent flourish of cinnamon buns and sweet black tea with lemon squeeze on the midpalate.
Finish: Dark chocolate and barrel char kick off a long, balanced finish accented by fading notes of seasoned oak and toffee.

Bottled at 100 proof, Knob Creek’s 10-Year Rye marks a welcome addition to the brand's esteemed lineup, taking the already well-regarded 7-Year Rye and elevating it to new heights. With more time in the barrel, this version shows greater depth and complexity, while still maintaining the familiar sweetness that Knob Creek fans love. The high corn mashbill adds a layer of smoothness and sweetness, making this rye particularly approachable for bourbon drinkers who are new to rye whiskey.
Tasting notes
Nose: it opens with sweet notes of dark caramel, melted vanilla ice cream, and brown butter, offering a luxurious mouthfeel that resonates with bourbon drinkers.
Palate: The palate introduces fruitier flavors of green apple, pear, and black cherry, with a cola-like richness and hints of baking spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg.
Finish: The finish, a smooth blend of creamy mocha and soft leather, leaves a lasting impression

Bulleit’s 12-Year Rye makes a return in 2024, and it’s better than ever. This expression of MGP’s classic 95% rye mashbill offers a rich, balanced experience that showcases the benefits of aging without becoming overly tannic or oaky. At 92 proof, it strikes a perfect balance between strength and approachability, making it an ideal choice for both whiskey connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike. This rye hits all the right notes of spice and sweetness, with flavors of dark caramel, vanilla, and a nice balance of oak. It’s a great choice for sipping neat but also brings a special twist to classic rye cocktails like an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan. What sets the 12-Year Rye apart from its younger counterparts is its refined maturity. The sweetness from the extended aging process is complemented by a complexity that gives this rye a more sophisticated profile than the younger Bulleit Rye expressions.
Tasting Notes
Nose: A sweet, inviting nose of warm caramel, honey, and citrus zest, with hints of pumpernickel bread, mint, and light oak. The aging brings out a bit of rickhouse funk and some earthy herbal notes that add depth to the rye character.
Palate: On the tongue, it’s warm and smooth with plenty of vanilla, caramel, and a touch of peach. Cracked black pepper and bright citrus notes shine through, balanced by a drying oakiness that adds complexity without overshadowing the sweetness. A subtle espresso and roasted flavor builds toward the finish.
Finish: A soft, lingering finish with hints of vanilla sweetness, gentle drying oak, and a faint kiss of espresso and roasted nuts.

This 2024 release represents a significant milestone for Sagamore Spirit, featuring their oldest age statement to date. While the Maryland brand has recently begun releasing rye whiskey distilled in-house, this particular expression showcases their masterful blending expertise with sourced whiskey from MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. What we particularly love about this release is its incredibly dense, viscous mouthfeel - even more pronounced than their excellent 2023 release.
What makes this release particularly special is Sagamore's unique approach to blending. They combine two distinct mashbills:
- A high-rye recipe consisting of 95% rye and 5% malted barley
- A more balanced recipe with 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% malted barley
This combination allows them to capture both the bold spiciness of a high-rye mashbill and the sweeter, more rounded characteristics of a traditional Kentucky-style rye. Building on their well-received 8-year release from 2023, this 112.6- proof, 9-year expression demonstrates how an additional year of maturation can add remarkable depth and complexity.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Bursting with apricot and Juicy Fruit gum, followed by fresh waffle cones, nutmeg, and caramel sauce.
Palate: Opens with unmistakable apricot notes and burnt orange peel, transitioning to cloves, brown sugar, and dark plums.
Finish: Black pepper and fresh waffle cone, with lingering notes of cinnamon and cocoa powder.

Rock legends Metallica made waves in the whiskey world with their limited-edition Blackened: Rye the Lightning. This unique rye whiskey is aged while blasting the band's iconic album "Ride the Lightning," a technique known as “Black Noise sonic enhancement.” This innovative process, developed in collaboration with sound engineers at Meyer Sound, utilizes low-hertz sound waves to create vibrations that cause the whiskey to reverberate rapidly. This interaction with the oak staves of the barrel reportedly enhances the extraction of wood compounds and flavors. After the sonic aging, the whiskey undergoes a double finishing in Madeira wine and Caribbean rum casks. According to Metallica, the result is a complex spirit filled with notes of dried fig, pinewood, and clover honey.
On the other side of the world, Belgrove Distillery in Tasmania is committed to sustainability and innovation, exemplified by their Wholly Sh*t Rye Whiskey. This unique spirit is crafted using a distinctive method: the sheep’s manure from Belgrove’s own flock is burned to produce smoke, which is then injected into a wet barrel. This innovative technique captures unique smoke compounds, resulting in a rich and complex flavor profile that sets this whiskey apart from traditional peated varieties. With only a limited number of bottles available, this abstract release is destined to be highly collectible. Its distinctiveness even caught the attention of Gordon Ramsay, who featured it in his docuseries , further solidifying its unique place in the world of whisky. If you whiskey fan who loves stepping into the obscure, “Wholly Sh*t Rye Whiskey” is definitely worth a try.
Always at the forefront of innovation, WhistlePig are certainly not afraid to experiment. This time around, WhistlePig has taken rye whiskey to the racetrack with their limited-edition Piggyback Legends Series, created in collaboration with the Alfa Romeo F1® Team. This high-rye whiskey is not only selected by race car drivers but also undergoes a crazy aging process. In their own words, Whistlepig tests these barrels in a wind tunnel, “to ensure a thrilling taste in every sip”. If that wasn't enough, these barrels were subjected to varying levels of G-Forces at the Whistle Pig farm and distillery; according to WhisltePig this process enhances the interaction between the whiskey and the wood while staying true to the dynamic spirit of Formula 1. At this point we aren't even surprised by Whistle pigs seemingly limitless creativity; we’re curious to see what they have in store for future releases.
Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, Jefferson's has taken aging to new depths—literally. Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon is matured on a ship that sails the world’s oceans, allowing the bourbon to interact with the wood of the barrels in a dynamic way. According to Jeffersons, the constant motion of the waves, coupled with exposure to salty sea air and fluctuating temperatures, creates a unique profile in each release. With 25 different voyages completed so far, each addition to this collection tells its own story, making every bottle a singular experience.
Cleveland Whiskey takes an innovative approach to aging with their patented Pressure Aging™ process. Cleveland Whiskey’s Founder Tom Lix believes in challenging traditional bourbon norms, creating spirits that can be ready to drink in less than a week, rather than the typical eight to twelve years. Their unique method involves filling a stainless-steel vat with freshly distilled liquor and adding cut-up pieces of oak, which are agitated under pressure to mimic years of aging in just a few days. This process was applied to their Black Cherry Wood Bourbon, that resulted in a spirit that is “unquestionably and deliciously different”.

From Mexico comes Abasolo, a whiskey crafted from 100% Mexican Cacahuazintle corn. This spirit stands out for its unique production method that includes nixtamalization, an ancient 4000-year-old technique where the corn is soaked and cooked in an alkaline lime bath before being hulled; Interestingly this technique is typically used in making tortillas. The combination of nixtamalized and malted corn undergoes an extensive fermentation process before aging in both new and old casks, resulting in a rich and flavorful whiskey that highlights the terroir of Mexico. Located at one of the highest altitudes among whiskey distilleries, Abasolo benefits from cool temperatures that promote a distinctive aging process. The distillery has repurposed horse stables into open-air warehouses, allowing the whiskey to expand and contract rapidly in the barrels due to temperature fluctuations.
Not released yet, Mystic Distillery plans to send barrels of bourbon to Low Earth Orbit for one year of aging! The first whiskey to be aged in space! Currently aging in new charred oak barrels, these will be reinforced with titanium hoops before being launched into space aboard the Nyx, a rocket from Berlin-based The Exploration Company. Founder Jonathan Blitz explained that the barrels will need to be dumped and re-barreled for the journey, with baffles added for stability to prevent the spacecraft from flipping during reentry. After a year in orbit, the orbiter will splash down in the ocean—hopefully with some stellar whiskey on board.
As for whether bourbon can be aged in space, Mystic Distillery is sure that once it’s in a new charred oak container, it qualifies as bourbon. Though they initially faced regulatory hurdles, the distillery ensures the label will proudly read “bourbon whiskey,” perhaps with a note about its orbital adventure! This Bourbons price tag is quite literally out of this world, set at $75,000 and limited to around 1200 bottles!
Glenmorangie’s A Tale of the Forest is a tribute to nature, using a traditional technique of kilning barley with woodland botanicals like juniper, birch bark, heather and rowan. This unique approach imbues the whiskey with aromas reminiscent of a forest and is meant to result in aromas of sweet campfire smoke and notes of notes of fresh mint, sweet pine sap, and dried berries. The creation of A Tale of the Forest stirred some controversy with the Scotch Whisky Association, which raised concerns about the inclusion of botanicals—a practice historically used in Scotch production, though Glenmorangie was able to overcome this obstacle releasing “A Tale of Forrest” in midway through 2022.

Coming in at the top spot is , a flavor that’s bursting with bold, juicy fruitiness. This limited-edition whisky has garnered considerable attention since its release, with some calling it the "hottest whiskey of 2024.” It introduces a delightful twist to the traditional Crown Royal profile, capturing the essence of fresh blackberries. With a well-balanced aroma of sweet vanilla and floral notes, it leads to a palate that combines the tartness of blackberry with hints of caramel and oak. Critics have praised its unique taste, noting the fresh blackberry aroma complemented by a touch of toasted oak. The flavor profile strikes a balance between sweetness and traditional whisky undertones, making it approachable for both whisky enthusiasts and newcomers. Whether you’re mixing up a classic Whiskey Sour or enjoying it straight, this whisky offers a refreshing take on flavored spirits, deserving of the number one spot as the best Crown Royal flavor.

is a limited-edition seasonal delight that adds a touch of festivity with its striking pumpkin-orange felt bag. This flavor is crafted using the iconic Crown Royal base, which combines over 50 whiskies for a smooth, complex profile. The distillery infuses natural salted caramel flavoring, making it a unique entry in the Crown Royal lineup. With its enticing combination of sweet and salty flavors, opinions on this whisky can be quite polarizing. On the nose, you’re greeted by inviting aromas of caramel apple and warm cinnamon spice, hinting at the indulgent experience to come. The palate follows suit with a sweet entry, showcasing flavors of vanilla and lightly salted caramel that glide effortlessly. While the sweetness is rich and creamy, some reviews, including those from Drinkhacker.com, note that it can border on overpowering, potentially overshadowing the underlying whisky character. The flavors of this whisky are smooth and approachable, ideal for newcomers to flavored whiskies. It manages to effectively balance caramel, salt, and spice, making it a suitable option for those exploring this category. Despite some critics pointing out the artificial sweetness, many find it a satisfying choice, particularly enjoyed on ice. This whisky isn’t merely a liqueur but rather a well-rounded flavored whisky that balances sweetness with the classic Crown Royal profile.

Next up is , a flavor that captures the essence of juicy Georgia peaches in a smooth whisky blend. Launched in 2019, this flavor quickly became a fan favorite, celebrated for its vibrant, fruity profile that’s perfect for warm weather. Crown Royal describes it as a blend of their famously smooth liquid with the sweet, delicious flavor of fresh peaches. However, if you crack open the bottle, you’ll be greeted by an intense aroma that aggressively resembles peach candy—think gummy rings from a pick ‘n’ mix bag. On the palate, the sweetness continues to dominate, often overshadowing any traditional whisky character. You might find it reminiscent of liquefied peach candies, with only a faint echo of vanilla detectable on the finish. Its strong peach candy aroma and taste dominate, making it a unique offering in the Crown Royal lineup that’s sure to please those with a penchant for sweetness.

Taking the fourth spot is , a delightful expression that marries the smoothness of Crown Royal whisky with the rich flavor of Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla. This infusion creates a sweet, creamy experience that’s perfect for those who love both vanilla and Canadian whisky. The nose invites you in with sweet vanilla and custard aromas, setting the stage for a palate that delivers a heavily vanilla-forward experience, occasionally bordering on marshmallow-sweetness. While it might not be groundbreaking, it certainly caters to those who enjoy a dessert-like profile. Light mixed berry notes and a hint of milk chocolate add a touch of complexity, though the primary focus remains on that sweet vanilla syrup character. As noted by Drinkhacker.com, Crown Royal Vanilla is designed with mixing in mind, fitting seamlessly into cocktails—especially with cola or other simple combinations. It’s an approachable choice for both cocktail enthusiasts and whisky novices, offering a smooth and enjoyable sipper.

Next on the list is , a flavor that delightfully combines the smoothness of Crown Royal with the bright, crisp notes of Regal Gala apples. With a well-balanced profile, it presents sweet and tart fruit flavors that dance on the palate, accompanied by hints of vanilla and spice. Regal Apple is designed for those who enjoy a fruit-forward twist to their whisky experience. Its sweet-as-candy flavor, derived from actual Regal Gala apples, works beautifully in cocktails or punches aimed at masking the alcohol. However, if you’re seeking a traditional whisky experience, you might want to look elsewhere. This spirit is particularly approachable for newcomers, thanks to its low proof of 35% (70 proof) and sweet, candy-like profile. The aroma features notes reminiscent of apple juice mixed with candy, creating an inviting scent. On the palate, it’s intensely sweet—think apple dipped in honey—making it a great mixer, especially in a highball with ginger ale or sparkling water. While the apple flavor can overwhelm the whisky characteristics for purists, fans of fruity spirits will find joy in its vibrant profile.

embodies the quintessential Canadian spirit, blending the nation’s beloved rye whisky with rich maple flavoring. Introduced in 2012, this flavor marked a bold step in Crown Royal’s offerings, showcasing a distinctly Canadian flair. Infused with natural maple flavor and rested in maple-toasted oak barrels, this whisky delivers a sweet profile that’s reminiscent of a cozy breakfast—think boozy pancakes in a bottle. While some might see it as a touch cliché, it’s a delightful tribute to the country’s maple heritage. However, opinions on Crown Royal Maple are mixed. Many cite its overwhelming sweetness as a downside, while others appreciate its potential for mixed cocktails, particularly in sweeter concoctions. Some suggest it pairs well with bacon, making it an intriguing choice for brunch cocktails.

is a sweet and approachable flavored whisky that blends the brand’s smooth Canadian rye with the rich essence of honey. Introduced in 2016 as a limited-time offering, its scarcity has made it a sought-after item among collectors and enthusiasts. Sadly, this limited release means many have yet to experience its unique flavor profile. The honey flavor is prominent, creating a syrupy sweetness that can overshadow the whisky base. Many drinkers enjoy it straight or over ice, finding it refreshing and smooth. However, some aficionados feel that the sweetness can be overwhelming, lacking the complexity found in traditional whiskies.

While we're only just past the halfway point of 2024, it’s that time of year when we look back at the best bourbons of 2024 (so far) and bring you our favorite releases, whether limited or mainstream, that we’ve enjoyed drinking, sinking and sipping. We've seen some spectacular s hit the market and ignite our palates. The back end of 2024 is shaping up to be even better for enthusiasts, with a slew of exceptional releases that will extend on those mentioned in this list. If you're looking to expand your horizons, build your collection or simply indulge in some of the finest and rarest bourbons available, here are our top ten best bourbons of 2024 (so far) that you should consider adding to your shelf.
The best of the year so far, continues to set the standard for high-proof bourbon with its Small Batch Barrel Proof A124 release. Awarded Double Gold at the 2024 SFWSC, this uncut, unfiltered cask strength bourbon boasts a modest 59.5% ABV or 119-proof, the youngest and second-lowest proof small batch barrel proof ever released by Elijah Craig… but for what it might lack in punch, it certainly makes up for in drinkability! With notes of rich caramel, toasted oak, and a hint of dark chocolate, this bourbon is perfect for those who appreciate a nuanced and complexly layered drinking experience.
I recently wrote about Wheated Bourbon Whiskey in my Top 5 Most Anticipated Whiskeys of 2024, and now that it’s hit shelves and we’ve had a chance to get our hands on a bottle, I can safely say that the hype was worth it. A 121-proof cask strength, 35% wheat bourbon sounds like a mythical, made-up whiskey, but it does exist, and Heaven Hill has executed it perfectly. Supreme drinkability, high-proof heat without being overwhelming, a densely layered profile swimming with classic bourbon notes yet offering something new and unique thanks to the 35% wheat, 52% corn and 13% malted barley mash… this is what they’re talking about when they speak of dreamland.
The first release of 2024 in , the Booker’s 2024-01 Springfield Batch is a 62.25% ABV or 124.5-proof 7 year, 7 month and 8 day year old bourbon that pays homage to Beam’s Springfield distillery. Third on our list of the best of 2024 so far, the Springfield batch is an easy drinker with lashing of caramel, butterscotch, cinnamon, and a touch of smoky oak that’s wrapped around warm apple pie. The Springfield Batch is a classy statement from Booker's and a nod to their dedication to quality and craftsmanship.
An experimental list needs and experimental release, and who better to add at number 4 than Bardstown and their famed Collaborative Series. The 2024 release brings a collaboration between Bardstown and Indian whiskey producer Amrut, with the result a unique and bizarrely malt-forward blend of BouRye Whiskey finished in Amrut casks. The high-rye bourbons are sourced MGP Indiana whiskey, ranging from 8 years to 14 years old, and at 110-proof, it’s surprisingly approachable. Think Weller’s wheated mash but with the addition of malted cherry, herbal tea and waves of cinnamon - odd, but somehow it just works. The Bardstown Amrut Blend is an extremely interesting BouRye, and though technically not a classic bourbon, it’s a most deserving addition to the best of 2024 list.
This isn’t the best ever. It is, however, one of the best bourbons I’ve tried this year and enters the list at #5. Why? There’s an intriguing level of mystery as to what’s actually in the bottle. An undisclosed distillery from Kentucky. A blend of 7, 12 and 16 year old bourbons. Double finished in Cabernet franc and Merlot casks. Rumored to be from Wild Turkey or Heaven Hill. The list goes on… Blood Oath Pact 10 continues the legacy of expertly crafted bourbons with its 2024 release. Bottled at the standard 49.3% ABV or 98.6-proof, this bourbon is a blend of three unique bourbons and double-finished in a complementary pair of wine casks - it’s just a recipe for great bourbon whiskey-making. The result is full of forest fruits, thick caramel sauce and baked goods, before berry and brownie notes come to the fore and finish with layers of butterscotch and more wild fruit notes - a dessert-like aperitif.
It would be folly to leave Weller Millenium off this list. Excruciatingly limited, this 49.5% ABV or 99-proof blended bourbon whiskey, features a 24 year old bourbon aged at Buffalo Trace distillery and is one of the oldest spirits ever produced by the Kentucky institution. Who knows where the dust will settle on this bourbon, but (at the moment) it is undoubtedly the most collectible whiskey release of 2024. Silky wheat, balanced bourbon flavors and a warm-enough proof to introduce itself loudly on the palate, Weller Millenium has a hard task living up to the hype and pricetag, but it does so with gusto and panache.
is known for its innovative, envelope-pushing releases, with the upcoming Madeira Cask finish a guaranteed hot commodity. Before this, however, the series sees a much-loved staple return with the Woodford Master’s Collection 2024 Batch Proof entering the fray at #7 on our list of the year’s best. Bottled at a plucky 60.6% ABV or 121.2-proof, this sharp cask-strength bourbon showcases the brand's classic flavor combinations and unwavering commitment to their recipe made their way. Expect a symphony of vanilla, caramel and an oddly tart cherry note, alongside classic dried fruit, baking spice and a sort of coca-cola clove note, balanced by a lengthy, lingering heat that slaps you in the face with every sip.
Not quite the triumph I’d hoped it would be, and not quite the best release in this formidable limited edition silo, but Triumph does an excellent job of continuing the legacy that the Kentucky distillery has built in the limited-release space. The first rye since the Cornerstone edition, and only the second rye in the Master’s Keep series (if you exclude Unforgotten as BouRye bourbon), Wild Turkey Triumph is a 10 year old, 104-proof rye that bats well above its average (and actually incorporates some 12 year old rye). As the 10th edition in the collection it was always going to be difficult to live up to expectations, and perhaps the choice of Rye made this a little bit more difficult than it could have been, however, it is still a punchy, spicy and memorable whiskey that celebrates one of the best limited release series that has survived the last decade.

It has gained recognition as one of the oldest and smallest distilleries in Kentucky, preserving the traditions and craftsmanship that define bourbon-making.

Following fermentation, the liquid goes through double distillation in copper pot stills, a method that imparts richness and complexity to the bourbon. The spirit is then aged in new, charred American oak barrels, allowing it to develop its signature flavors over time. In the realm of premium whisky, few names resonate with as much reverence as . With a legacy spanning centuries, this distillery has crafted an array of remarkable expressions, each with its own allure and character. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the world of The Macallan, pitting their illustrious 12, 15, 18, and 25-year-old whiskies against each other in an epic battle for supremacy to finally answer that age old question... which Macallan is best? While this is by no means an exhaustive answer to said conundrum, if we talking Macallan 12 vs 15 or Macallan 15 vs 18, then grab your Glencairn glass and prepare for a sensory journey through the ages.
: A Classic Foundation
We kick off our exploration with The Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak, a beloved expression that serves as the entry point into the Macallan range. This whisky, matured in a combination of sherry-seasoned oak casks, showcases the distillery's signature flavors of dried fruits, spice, and a rich, velvety texture. At its price-point, Macallan's 12 Sherry Oak offers an accessible and approachable experience for whisky enthusiasts, making it an ideal choice for those venturing into the world of The Macallan. I personally am a huge fan of Macallan 12, but tend to lean towards older bottlings or more matured age statements nowadays. For the unseasoned drinker or novice whiskey connoisseurs, Macallan 12 represents exceptional value and a phenomenal sipping spirit.
: A Refined Symphony
Moving up the ladder, we encounter The Macallan 15 Year Old Sherry Oak, a whisky that brings more elegance and refinement to its younger predecessor. This expression showcases the art of balancing flavors, offering a captivating marriage of spice, dried fruits, and a lingering sweetness produced by the sherry-cask-influence. The Macallan 15 Year Sherry Oak is a bridge between the younger 12-year-old and the older, more complex offerings in The Macallan portfolio. If we're pitting Macallan 12 against Macallan 15, I have the Macallan 15 ahead on points, but only just... at their price points, Macallan 12 arguably offers more value due to the similarities in taste and profile. Once we get into the bigger boys, that's when the Macallan Sherry Oaks start to drift apart.
: A Testament to Maturity
As we ascend further we arrive at The Macallan 18 Year Old Sherry Oak, a malt that commands attention with its depth and sophistication. This whisky, matured exclusively in sherry oak casks, offers a symphony of flavors that dance on the palate. You can expect notes of dark chocolate, dried fruits, spices, and a lingering sherry-oak influence that intertwines with an exquisite richness. The Macallan 18 Year Old heralds the distillery's commitment to crafting whiskies that epitomize elegance and maturity, and is the best single malt scotch whisky of the first 3 age statements in the collection. It's a more viscous, more luxurious sip, in large part thanks to the additional years spent in the cask. I am of the opinion that the Macallan 18 is the best representation of the Speyside Distillery's malts in the Sherry Oak series, and is a good-value collectible but an even better drinker. If Macallan 12, 15 and 18 Sherry Oak are side-by-side, the 18 wins by a landslide.
: The Pinnacle of Excellence
While it's perhaps a touch unfair to compare with the Macallan 12, 15 and 18, at the apex of The Macallan's range stands the legendary Macallan 25 Year Old. This whisky needs no introduction, it is class personified and one of the best single malts available. Matured for a quarter of a century in sherry oak casks, it embodies a symphony of flavors with the thick, sherry-influenced richness that you'd expect, commingling with layers of dried fruit, baking spices, rich oak, and a lingering, lavish sweetness that ties together each sip. The Macallan 25 Year Old is a whisky for special occasions, one to be celebrated and savored with your closest friends and family.
When comparing The Macallan 12, 15, 18, it's important to note that each expression offers a distinct experience, tailored to different preferences and occasions. The Macallan 12 Year Old and 15 Year Old provide accessible entry points, with the former offering a classic foundation and the latter showcasing refined complexity.
The Verdict: Choosing The
After a thorough exploration of The Macallan's esteemed range, the time has come for me to make a verdict - and I am reluctant to do so given the caliber of these whiskeies. It's important to remember that the concept of "better" is subjective and can vary depending on individual preferences and taste profiles. Nonetheless, we provide a recommendation based on the distinct qualities and characteristics of each whisky.
For whisky enthusiasts seeking an accessible entry into The Macallan's world, the Macallan 12 Year Old stands as a classic foundation. Its combination of sherry-seasoned oak casks and velvety texture offers a delightful introduction to the brand's flavor profile.
Stepping up in sophistication, the Macallan 15 Year Old strikes a balance between complexity and refinement. It delivers what it says on the bottle and is perfect for whisky enthusiasts seeking a little bit more from their malt.
For those in search of the winner, the Macallan 18 Year Old emerges as the leading contender. As far as value for money goes, the Macallan 18 is my selection for quality and consistency, while not breaking the bank completely. It's a foundational whisky and one that you can return to and still be impressed by each time you sip.
While all of these expressions hold their own allure, my recommendation for whisky enthusiasts seeking an answer to this ageist conundrum, I would lean in favor of the Macallan 18. It's unrivaled in its ability to bridge the gaps between quality, complexity and value.
Ultimately, the choice between The Macallan 12, 15 and 18, depends on individual preferences and the desired whisky experience. Whisky enthusiasts are encouraged to explore and savor each expression to discover their own personal favorite within The Macallan's illustrious range. Whether it's the classic foundation of the 12-year-old, the refined complexity of the 15-year-old, the profound elegance of the 18-year-old, or the unparalleled excellence of the 25-year-old, The Macallan offers a world of whisky wonders to be explored and savored.
